What is Off the Scale Castleton
A refill shop with a difference...

Off the Scale Castleton is a refill shop, you can buy a selection of dry foods, such as rice, pasta, sugar, chocolate chips, oats, cocoa, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, coffee beans (can be ground upon request) herbs and spices, sweets by weight and penny sweets too!
The refill idea came about due to our own desire to be more eco friendly on a budget, we found that the eco friendly lifestyle was not as wallet friendly as we needed it to be! So we set out with a plan to make a budget friendly refill shop and also to take a step back in time, not be self serve refill but to refill your containers for you. Months of searching and price checking and we are able to offer quality products very competitive prices, buying in bulk does help with this, especially on the herbs and spices, for example, a jar of parsley is around 20p to refill!
Then we have the liquid refills, washing up liquid, hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, kitchen and bathroom cleaner, toilet cleaner, laundry liquid, fabric conditioner, laundry powder, all of which are vegan, cruelty free, septic tank safe (this was a must have living where we do!), free from harsh chemicals, ph neutral. We stock products from a company called Fill, they are now a certified B corp, leaping bunny certified and we think they're pretty amazing! The products are supplied in recycled plastic drums that are then returned to Fill, cleaned and used over and over, ZERO WASTE!
We are also very proud to stock a range of ‘off the scale’, locally made crafts, this was something we always wanted to have in the shop to support local people with amazing skills and talents and what a talented bunch there are! Definitely worth a visit if you need a special gift, from jewellery, hand sewn bags, toys, hand knitted items, pottery, candles, soaps and so much more!
We bake in house and offer a selection of freshly baked treats, baking day is everyday but Tuesday the first day of the week bakes are usually ready from 10am. You will always find a choice of gluten free cakes, often something dairy free, and sometimes a vegan treat too!

The history behind Off the Scale Castleton
A family business right from the start...

The shop first came into the Watson family, we think, when Charlie Watson bought it in around 1913 and opened a butchers shop. Charlie’s son Ernie then took on the shop when Charlie retired, then Ernie’s son Ian (Mark's Father) took on the shop at Ernie’s retirement. During Annie and Ian’s ownership as well as predominantly being a butcher's, they also sold groceries, household products, home baked cakes and penny sweets. The penny sweets were covered with a sheet of polythene and adorned a table in the middle of the shop, a handy crate awaited those little feet belonging the smaller children that couldn’t reach. I know many people love and treasure this memory as those children now visit the shop with their children and fondly recall their childhood visits!
